How to Monitor Product Changes in Your Shopify Store (And Why It Matters)

To track product changes in your Shopify store, use Alius to create a trigger for the Product Added, Product Edited, or Product Deleted event and route it to email, Slack, or Telegram. This catches unauthorized price changes, accidental deletions, and unexpected edits from staff or third-party apps the moment they happen, instead of after customers see them.

A Single Pricing Mistake Can Cost You Thousands

It happens to every store at some point. A staff member edits the wrong product. A bulk price import overwrites prices incorrectly. A product gets deleted instead of archived. And by the time someone notices, dozens of customers have already seen — or worse, purchased at — the wrong price.

Product catalog errors are one of the most common and costly mistakes in e-commerce. They can lead to margin losses, customer complaints, refund requests, and damage to your brand's reputation.

The solution isn't to lock down admin access or double-check every change manually. The solution is real-time awareness — knowing the moment something changes so you can act before it becomes a problem.

Alius gives you exactly that. (If you're new here, start with what Alius is and how it works.)

What Product Events Does Alius Monitor?

Alius tracks three types of product events in your Shopify store:

Product Added

This event fires when a new product is published or created in your Shopify store.

Use cases:

  • Notify your marketing team the moment a new product goes live so they can start promotion
  • Alert your fulfillment team that new inventory needs to be set up in your warehouse system
  • Track when new products are added by staff without prior communication

Product Edited

This event fires when any aspect of an existing product is modified — including price, title, description, images, tags, variants, inventory levels, or SEO metadata.

Use cases:

  • Catch unauthorized or accidental price changes immediately
  • Know when product descriptions or images are updated (useful for content quality control)
  • Monitor inventory adjustments and restock events
  • Detect SEO changes that could impact search rankings

Product Deleted

This event fires when a product is permanently removed from your Shopify store.

Use cases:

  • Prevent accidental deletions from going unnoticed (Shopify deletions are permanent)
  • Keep your catalog management team accountable
  • Maintain a human-readable audit trail of what was removed and when

Why Product Change Notifications Are Critical for Growing Stores

When you're running a one-person store and you're the only one making changes, you probably have a pretty good sense of what's in your catalog. But as your store grows, that changes fast.

Multi-admin environments are risky. The moment you add a second admin — a virtual assistant, a catalog manager, a developer, or a business partner — your control over the product catalog becomes shared. Anyone with admin access can edit prices, unpublish products, or delete listings at any time.

Third-party apps can change products too. Many Shopify apps (pricing tools, inventory managers, fulfillment platforms) have permission to modify products. Sometimes they make changes that aren't expected or intended.

Bulk edits are powerful — and dangerous. Shopify's bulk editor, CSV imports, and third-party bulk editing tools can update hundreds of products at once. A misconfigured import can cascade across your entire catalog in seconds.

How to Set Up Product Notifications with Alius

Step 1: Connect Your Integration

Choose where you want product alerts to go — email, Slack, or Telegram. For catalog monitoring, many teams prefer Slack so changes are logged in a searchable channel that anyone can review.

Step 2: Create a Product Trigger

In the Triggers section of Alius, create a new trigger and select the event you want to monitor: Added, Edited, or Deleted.

You can create separate triggers for each event type and route them to different channels — for example, "Product Deleted" could go to a high-priority Telegram group, while "Product Edited" posts to a low-noise Slack channel.

Step 3: Refine with Conditions

Use Alius's conditional logic to filter alerts:

  • Only notify me when a product in a specific collection is edited
  • Alert me only when a price change occurs (not description updates)
  • Fire an alert only when a product tagged "hero-product" is modified

This helps you focus on the changes that matter most to your business without drowning in noise.

Step 4: Activate

Activate the trigger and start monitoring. From this point forward, any qualifying product event will immediately generate a notification.

Your Catalog Deserves Better Than Hope

Hoping that nothing goes wrong with your product catalog isn't a strategy. Real-time product change notifications are. Want to apply the same real-time discipline to your customer base? Read our guide to Shopify customer event notifications, or learn how to use conditional alerts to cut the noise.
