Short answer: the five Shopify alerts every merchant should set up are new order, high-value order, refund issued, order edited and low or out of stock. Together they cover your revenue, your risks and your inventory. In Alius each one is a separate alert with its own conditions and channel — Slack, Telegram, Discord or email — and the Free plan covers the first three.

Most merchants are flying blind on order activity

Ask merchants how they hear about order events and the answer is usually "I check the admin" or "I get Shopify's new order email". Neither is real monitoring. Checking by hand means you are always behind, and Shopify's staff emails cover only a few events with no filters.

What you need are targeted, real-time alerts for the events that matter to your store. Here are the five that pay off first. (New to Alius? Start with what Alius is and how it works.)

1. New order alert — the foundation

What it is: a message every time an order is placed.

Why it matters: you stay connected to sales wherever you are, and fulfillment can start at once. On a busy store, add a condition — such as one product line or one country — so the channel stays readable, or batch it into a daily digest on Pro and Max.

Set up: event Order created, no condition. Channel: Telegram for a phone ping, Slack for the team.

2. High-value order alert — your VIP monitor

What it is: an alert only when an order is above a threshold you choose — $300, $500, $1,000.

Why it matters: a $1,200 wholesale order deserves more attention than a $15 impulse buy. A personal thank-you, a priority shipping flag or a fraud check all start with knowing it arrived.

Set up: start from the ready-made High-Value Order template (total price greater than 500) and change the amount. Channel: a dedicated #vip-orders in Slack.

3. Refund alert — protect your margin

What it is: an alert every time a refund is issued.

Why it matters: refunds are money leaving the business. A pattern — the same product, the same customer, the same staff member — is easy to spot when every refund lands in one place, and almost impossible to see in the admin.

Set up: event Refund created. Channel: email to whoever handles finance, for a clean record.

4. Order edited alert — your error-catching safety net

What it is: an alert when an existing order is changed after it was placed.

Why it matters: some edits signal problems:

  • A shipping address changed after the parcel was packed
  • A staff member removed or swapped a line item by mistake
  • Another app changed order data unexpectedly

Set up: event Order updated with the condition Edited equals true. To catch cancellations for fraud, add a second alert with Cancel reason contains "fraud". Channel: Slack #ops-alerts.

5. Low and out of stock alert — don't sell what you can't ship

What it is: a warning before a product runs out, not after.

Why it matters: a best-seller that quietly sells out loses sales every hour nobody notices. Alius gives you two ways in:

  • Simple: the ready-made Low Stock (inventory below 5) and Out of Stock templates.
  • Per location: reorder alerts from the Stock page. They tell you what runs out at which location, how many units to reorder and from which supplier — with an Add to PO button in Slack, Telegram and Discord. See our guide to low stock alerts and reorder points.

Channel: Slack #purchasing, or email to the buyer.

Setting up all five in Alius

  1. Install Alius from the Shopify App Store.
  2. Connect your channels — Slack, Telegram, Discord or email.
  3. Create one alert per row in the table above.
  4. Set the conditions and switch each alert on.

The Free plan includes 3 alert rules plus daily reorder alerts for 10 items, which covers alerts 1–3 and a start on stock. Pro ($9.99/month) gives 10 rules and real-time reorder alerts.

Start with the basics, then build

Run these five for a week, see which ones your team acts on, then tune the thresholds. From there, add customer and product alerts. Ready to route them? See our guides to order notifications in Slack and setting smart conditions to cut the noise.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most important Shopify order alert?

A new order alert, filtered if needed. It keeps you connected to every sale. Add a high-value order alert next, so big orders get special attention.

Can I get an alert only for orders above a certain amount?

Yes. In Alius, create an Order created alert with the condition total price greater than your amount, or start from the High-Value Order template.

Can Shopify alert me when an order is refunded or edited?

Not by default. Shopify staff notifications cover only a few events. Alius adds alerts for refunds (Refund created) and edits (Order updated with Edited equals true).

How many alerts can I set up for free?

The Alius Free plan includes 3 alert rules, each sending to one channel, plus daily reorder alerts for 10 items. Pro ($9.99/month) includes 10 rules.
